We all like a little freeness! Am I right? I already know the answer to that question. However, there comes a point when you get fed up of giving ‘free’ and sometimes even getting ‘free’! You see, whether we like to admit it or not, we mentally place a value on everything and the truth is we just don’t value free like we do paid. When you pay for something, you tend to take more care of it and appreciate it more than if you came by it without having to dig into your purse or wallet. We just figure ‘aw well, nothing lost as I didn’t pay for it anyway’. Sound familiar?
Imagine if I did your hair in an absolutely stunning style and you didn’t pay for it. As soon as it starts to get a little wassi or your scalp starts scratching you, you are quick to remove the hairstyle and move on with your life. However, if I had charged you $150 for that hairstyle, best believe once it starts scratching, you’re going to look for some grease or dry shampoo so you can keep that hairstyle a little longer and get your money’s worth!
Well, it’s the same with classes and courses and services and products. You don’t really squeeze the value out of them unless you have something to lose if you don’t use them up.
Now I’m not saying you should NEVER do free. There are cases where charity is not only appropriate but you genuinely want to give of yourself. However, if you want to be a business, you really need to start acting like one and you can’t call yourself a business if you aren’t actually making any money. Ya feel me?
So, start acting like a business and get your rates in order. The next time somebody asks you to do them a ‘favour’ which uses your skills and talents that you paid to obtain, whip out your rate sheet or refer them to your website or social media page, where your rates are listed, and tell them to make an appointment. Don’t be surprised if the majority run a mile or curse you out. Don’t worry about it though. Those who are there for you are there for you. Just keep it moving!
There are people out there who are willing to pay for what they want and need. You will likely find them at southsidelinks.com, where we are a community of Soufrierans looking to uplift each other and support each other’s ventures.
If you have a business or a service, you can start with a free listing or get a paid listing with all the bells and whistles. In any case, don’t be the ‘best kept secret’ out there. Get yourself seen. Get yourself paid!
